Salute a te, viandante
Io sono Antonio, il Santo eremita egiziano fondatore del monachesimo cristiano e primo degli abati. Alla mia opera si deve la costituzione in forma permanente di famiglie di monaci che sotto la guida di un padre spirituale, abbà, si sono consacrati al servizio di Dio. Sono rimasto orfano a 20 anni e dopo aver abbandonato ogni ricchezza mi sono consacrato alla vita monastica. In principio mi sono ritirato presso la mia città (Coma, in Egitto), in un luogo solitario, dedicandomi alla preghiera ed al lavoro. A 35 anni, preso ormai da una grande volontà di ascesi, mi sono inoltrato per il deserto, incamminandomi verso i monti del Pispir, in direzione del Mar Rosso. Con questo percorso, è nato in me il fuoco dell’ascetismo: «una fiamma che nessun’acqua poté estinguere», tanto che il mio isolamento è divenuto esemplare per molti altri monaci che si erano ritirati nel deserto e a me si sono rivolti per ricevere il mio insegnamento e la mia guida. In questo modo, chiamato ad essere abate, ho organizzato alcuni monasteri intorno al mio eremo presso la riva del Nilo, a ridosso delle montagne circostanti. Grazie alla divulgazione della “Vita” scritta da sant’Atanasio (Atanasio, Vita Antonii) le mie gesta si sono diffuse in tutta la cristianità ed il mio culto ha varcato i confini dell’Egitto estendendosi sia in Oriente che in Occidente. Presto la devozione nei miei confronti ha assunto caratteri fortemente popolari e sono stato considerato protettore contro i contagi e l’herpes zoster (detto dal volgo «fuoco di sant’Antonìo»). Reputato un potente taumaturgo, quando nel 1491 le mie reliquie furono traslate a Saint Julien, vicino ad Arles, sul luogo si sviluppò la principale devozione che riguardava la guarigione dal ‘fuoco di Sant’Antonio’: il numero dei malati che qui invocavano il mio aiuto è stato così elevato che fu necessario costruire apposite strutture ospedaliere ed impegnare l’ordine degli Antoniani per l’assistenza e la cura dei devoti pellegrini. I falò di sant’Antonio abate, che si accendono in moltissimi paesi, sono una pratica caratteristica ed affascinante della tradizionale vita comunitaria e rievocano il miracolo che ho compiuto mettendo in fuga gli invasori stranieri e trasformando le querce in grandi torce. Un' altra tradizione, molto sentita in svariati luoghi, che ha origini medioevali è quella di portare gli animali dell’aia a ricevere la benedizione ecclesiastica. Sono considerato infatti il santo protettore degli animali domestici: ecco perchè di solito vengo raffigurato con accanto un maialino che reca al collo una campanella.
PREGHIERA A SANT’ANTONIO ABATE
Gloriosissimo S. Antonio,
esempio luminoso di penitenza e di fortezza cristiana,
ardente di zelo per la salvezza delle anime
e di carità per il bene del prossimo,
Voi che otteneste da Dio la speciale virtù di liberare l’aria,
la terra, il fuoco e gli animali da ogni morbo e da ogni malefica influenza,
fate che con una santa vita imitiamo le vostre eroiche virtù
e che anche quaggiù in terra sperimentiamo
il vostro valevole patrocinio, ricevendo copiosissime
le vostre benedizioni su tutto ciò che serve
per la nostra alimentazione e pei nostri lavori,
sui corpi e sulle anime nostre. Così sia.
Hail you, traveller
I am Antonio, the hermit Egyptian hymen founder of the Christian monasticism and the first of the abbots. The permanent establishment of monks' families who under the guidance of a spiritual father, abbas, have consecrated themselves to the service of God, is due to my work. I became an orphan at the age of twenty and then I abandoned all my wealth and devoted myself to the monastic life. At the beginning I retired to my city (Coma, in Egypt) in a solitary place, devoting myself to prayer and work. At the age of 35, guided by a great desire of ascesis, I went to the desert, walking towards the mountains of Pispir and the Red Sea. Thanks to this journey, the fire of asceticism was born in me: "a flame that no water could extinguish," so that my isolation became exemplary for many other monks who had retired to the desert and turned to me in order to receive my teaching and my guide. In this way, called to be abbot, I organized some monasteries around my hermitage at the Nile shore, near the surrounding mountains. Through the divulgation of "Life" written by St. Athanasius (Atanasio, Vita Antonii), my gesture spreaded throughout the Christianity, and my worship crossed the borders of Egypt extending both in the East and in the West. Very soon, the devotion to me took on a strong popularity and was regarded as a protector against contagion and the herpes zoster (referred to as the "fire of St. Anthony").
Considered a powerful taumaturgo, when in 1491 my relics were translated to Saint Julien near Arles, the main devotion of the healing of Sant' Antonio's fire grew in the place: the number of sick people who here invoked my help was so high that it was necessary to build special hospitals and to commit the Order of the Antonians for the care of the devout pilgrims. The bonfires of St. Anthony Abbot, which are illuminated in many countries, are a practical and fascinating practice of the traditional community life, which recalls the miracle I accomplished by fleeing foreign invaders and transforming the oaks into great torches. Another tradition of medieval origins, known in various places, is to bring the animals of the church to receive ecclesiastical blessing. In fact, I am considered the saint protector of pets: this is why I usually stand next to a little pig who is wearing a bell.

Glorious S. Antonio,
Bright example of Christian penitence and fortress,
Ardent of zeal for the salvation of souls
And charity for the good of the neighbor,
You who have obtained from God the special virtue of liberating the air,
Earth, fire, and animals from all illnesses and all evil influences,
Let us imitate your heroic virtues with a holy life
And experience here on earth
Your worthy patronage, getting your very copious
blessings on everything we need,
for our food and our work, and
on our bodies and souls. Amen.
